The Office of Ministry with People with Disabilities celebrates and promotes the gifts of people with disabilities and is committed to working toward full participation of person with disabilities in all aspects of the life of the Church.

In January 2006, the Most Reverend Rhoades, Bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg, convened a Diocesan Task Force on Disabilities, which included persons with disabilities, family members and diocesan personnel. The Task Force developed and distributed two web-based surveys and in December 2006, recommendations were made to Bishop Rhoades. One of these recommendations was for the establishment of a diocesan level office of disabilities ministry. In August 2007, the Office of Ministry with People with Disabilities was established within the Secretariat for Catholic Life and Evangelization.

“People with disabilities are not looking for pity. They seek to serve the community and to enjoy their full baptismal rights as members of the Church. Our interaction with them can and should be an affirmation of our faith. There can be no separate Church for people with disabilities. We are one flock that serves a single shepherd.”
