Faith Groups Dialogue on Landmark Document
Former Vatican Official to Present

The Lutheran-Anglican-Roman Catholic Coordinating Committee will present a Day of
Dialogue on the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification. This document marked the
resolving of the problem of grace and good works that was at the heart of Reformation
disagreements for approximately 450 years. “From a Catholic perspective, the signing of this
document is the most significant ecumenical event since the Council of Trent”, said Deacon Charles
Clark, Director of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs for the Diocese of Harrisburg, All are
invited to this event that will take place on Monday, October 26, 2009 at the Cardinal Keeler Center
in Harrisburg.
The format for the day will include 2 presenters and a responder. The first presenter will be
a Roman Catholic, Reverend Msgr. John A. Radano. He recently served as staff member to the
Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and was Head of the Pontifical Council’s Western
Section. He is currently an adjunct professor at Seton Hall University. The second presenter will be
a Lutheran, The Rev. Dr. Cheryl M. Peterson. She is an Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology
at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. The Very Reverend William H. Peterson of the
Episcopal Church will offer a response to each of the presenters. He is a professor of Ecclesiastical
and Ecumenical History Provost at Bexley Hall in Columbus, Ohio.
The 1999 signing of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification by the Holy See
and the Lutheran World Federation has marked a high watermark in Lutheran Catholic relations,
resolving the problem of grace and good works that was at the heart of Reformation disagreements.
On the basis of this agreement, scholars representing the churches have been able to go back to the
theological work of applying this agreement to other issues that must be resolved if full communion
is to be achieved. While this text does not call for full mutual recognition of ordained ministries or
the integration of ecclesial structures, it proposes important new clarifications and pastoral steps
which will serve the pilgrimage toward full unity. The World Methodist Council (WMC) and its
member churches officially became associated with the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of
Justification in July of 2006.
All are invited to the Day of Dialogue which will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 3 p.m.
Registration is required along with a $20 fee payable to the Diocese of Harrisburg. Lunch is
included. For information or registration contact Deacon Charles Clark, Diocese of Harrisburg,
4800 Union Deposit Road, Harrisburg, PA 17111-3710, (717) 657-4804 ext. 265.
