Interfaith Shelter for Homeless Families

Established in 1992, the Interfaith Shelter for Homeless Families is the only emergency shelter in the capital region providing year-round services to families as a unit. Without the existence of the Interfaith Shelter, homeless children in this region would have to be separated from one or both of their parents, adding stress and fear to their already uncertain situation.

The Shelter is located on the grounds of the Harrisburg State Hospital and can house up to 55 individuals at one time. During fiscal year 2005-06, we served 682 homeless individuals, of which 421 (or 62%) were children.

Services Available:

While families reside in the shelter, case managers facilitate all the necessary supportive services either through direct service provision or through referral to other organizations and partners.

  • 30-day emergency shelter
  • Assistance in finding and securing permanent housing
  • Supplying clients’ basic needs of clothing, food and baby supplies
  • Referrals to other agencies to address the critical issues of employment, life-skills, mental and physical health, housing and childcare
  • Intensive case management services help clients address the issues that perpetuate homelessness and poverty

What is the cost?

Services at the Interfaith Shelter are offered at no charge to the client.
