Diocesan Liturgical Commission

For the same reason every diocese is to have a commission on the sacred liturgy under the direction of the bishop, for promoting the liturgical apostolate. (SACROSANCTUM CONCILIUM, 8)

The Diocesan Liturgical Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the Director of the Office of Worship, who, in turn, assists the diocesan Bishop in fulfilling his responsibilities as "promoter and guardian" of the liturgical life of the diocese. Its purpose is to foster a dynamic liturgical spirituality among the People of God in the Diocese of Harrisburg and to propose policies, guidelines and programs as well as providing education and formation beneficial to the liturgical renewal and spiritual life of the diocese and to assist the diocesan Bishop in implementing the same.

The committee is comprised of appointed members who include clergy, religious, and laity of varying liturgical expertise, cultural backgrounds, and regions of the diocese. A Chairperson and Commission Secretary serve in coordinating roles. The Diocesan Secretary for Catholic Life and Evangelization, the Director of the Office of Worship, and a Canonical Consultant serve as ex officio members.

There are four standing committees of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission. They are:

Liturgical Art and Architecture Committee
Sacred Music Committee
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Committee
Liturgical Formation and Catechesis Committee

Each committee has a chairperson, assisted by Diocesan Liturgy Committee members and others with interest and expertise in each specific field. "Ad Hoc" committees are established, as needed, by the Chairman or the Director of the Office of Worship. They include theologians, trained liturgists, pastoral ministers, musicians, catechists, artists, professionals in architecture and interior design, education professionals, and members of the worshipping assembly. This is a group of highly talented and dedicated individuals who together form a distinguished team that provides an incredible and invaluable service to the Diocese of Harrisburg
