(Taken from the Papal Bull establishing the Diocese)
On March 3, 1868, Pope Pius IX, accepting the recommendation of the Bishops of the Second Plenary Council of the United States of America, issued a decree establishing the Diocese of Harrisburg. We give thanks to Almighty God as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of our Diocese.
All are welcome to this Prayer Vigil that will include a live enactment of the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary by young people from throughout the Diocese, similar in many ways to the Living Way of the Cross. This event will replace the traditional Palm Sunday Youth Mass and Gathering for 2018. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Please join Bishop Ronald W. Gainer as Celebrant and Homilist to begin the anniversary year celebration. A reception, featuring a sampling of ethnic foods from various ethnic and cultural groups that comprise the faithful of the Diocese, will be held immediately following the Mass.
Join Bishop Gainer on a twelve-day pilgrimage to the Emerald Isle, sponsored by Catholic Charities. In keeping with the 150th anniversary celebration, the pilgrimage will include a visit to the grave of Saint Patrick, the Patron Saint of the Diocese of Harrisburg. Participation is limited.
SAVE THE DATE for this Diocesan pilgrimage to the Basilica in Washington, D.C. This will be the first time Bishop Gainer will lead our diocese to Washington since he was installed in 2014. The schedule for the day includes Mass and time for confessions, private prayer, touring of the Shrine, and visiting the spacious book & gift shops or having a bite to eat in the cafeteria.
Those wishing to attend should contact their parish as the parishes will be making their own arrangements for bus transportation from their parish to the Shrine and determining pickup locations, times, cost, etc. Smaller parishes may wish to join with others in reserving buses as a region. For those wishing to drive on their own there is ample parking at the Shrine. A schedule for the day and a list of parish buses will be made available here when it is available.
