We're All Part of God's Planet

Care for Creation Ministry

“Together with our obligation to use the earth’s goods responsibly, we are called to recognize that other living beings have a value of their own in God’s eyes: “by their mere existence they bless him and give him glory”,[41] and indeed, “the Lord rejoices in all his works” (Ps 104:31). By virtue of our unique dignity and our gift of intelligence, we are called to respect creation and its inherent laws, for “the Lord by wisdom founded the earth” (Prov 3:19). In our time, the Church does not simply state that other creatures are completely subordinated to the good of human beings, as if they have no worth in themselves and can be treated as we wish.”

Ways you can help

  • Educate self (see resources below)
  • Attend Care for Creation events or sponsor your own event

Consider answering the call to help Care for our Common Home by participating in a cemetery clean-up event. For Laudato Si Week, on Monday, May 20, from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., all are invited to help weed and clean up the grounds of Holy Cross Cemetery and Mount Calvary Cemetery, both in Harrisburg. The day will begin with Holy Mass at 8:45 a.m. at St. Catherine Laboure Church (4000 Derry St., Harrisburg). Clean-up will be at Holy Cross Cemetery (4075 Derry St., Harrisburg) from 9:30 a.m.-noon, and at Mount Calvary Cemetery (500 S. 13th St., Harrisburg), beginning at approximately 1:30 p.m. Please bring gloves and an edging/gardening tool, if possible. Wear old clothes and bring a water bottle. Both events are sponsored by the Diocesan Office for Life and Dignity. If you or your group would like to participate, contact Marianne Weltmer at mweltmer@hbgdiocese.org or 717-657-4804 ext. 322.

The Diocesan Care for Creation Mass celebrating our very beginnings and our role as stewards of God’s Creation will be held on September 22, 2024 at Holy Spirit Parish in Palmyra.
