Bishop Edward Malesic of Greensburg named 12th Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland

Early Thursday morning, July 16, Pope Francis named Most Reverend Edward C. Malesic, JCL, Bishop of the Diocese of Greensburg, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland, Ohio.

In Cleveland, he fills the vacant see left by Archbishop Nelson Perez, who was installed as the Archbishop of Philadelphia in February 2020. Father Don Oleksiak will continue as administrator of the Diocese of Cleveland until Bishop-designate Malesic is installed as the 12th Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland on Monday, September 14, during Mass at St. John the Evangelist Cathedral in downtown Cleveland.

No Mass Changes in light of New Restrictions

Today, July 15, 2020, Governor Wolf announced restrictions on dining facilities, bars, and workplaces in response to the increasing COVID-19 cases in the Commonwealth. Because of the vigilant efforts of the parishes in the Diocese regarding social distancing, wearing masks, and sanitization, there is no change to current Diocesan directives regarding the use of churches and public worship at this time.

Office of Catholic Schools Provides Letter on 2020-21 School Year

Our entire community should be very proud of our Catholic schools. Despite time limitations, a change in paradigm and a uniquely difficult time in our state and country, our schools stopped in-person instruction on March 13 and began distance learning on March 16. Our teachers are faith-filled professionals who give of themselves sacrificially for God, for their schools and for their students.

Guidelines Announced for Parishes in ‘Yellow’ Zone Counties

As counties transition from “red” to “yellow,” the Diocese of Harrisburg has provided new guidelines for parishes in these “yellow” zones. These guidelines were developed after reviewing the directives from the Governor’s Office and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as studies provided through the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Diocese will review and amend these directives as this situation continues to develop.

Bishop Gainer Suspends Holy Week and Easter Masses

At 4 p.m. today, Bishop Ronald Gainer will join Pope Francis and the faithful throughout the world in praying the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, for the protection of our families. During his general audience on March 18, Pope Francis announced he would join this initiative promoted by the Italian bishops and encouraged all the faithful to join as well.
