“The body, in fact, and only the body, is capable of making visible what is invisible: the spiritual and the divine. It has been created to transfer into the visible reality of the world, the mystery hidden from eternity in God, and thus to be a sign of it” (TOB 19:4).

Theology of the Body is St. John Paul II’s profound vision of what it means to be a human person created in God’s image. It helps us understand how and why we were created, our gifts and our identity in Christ, in order to see ourselves as God intended. Through this understanding of why we were created, we’ll be better able to answer some of the fundamental questions about us and our lives:

  • Is there a real purpose to life and if so, what is it?
  • What does it mean that we were created in the image of God?
  • Why were we created male and female, and does it really matter if we are one sex or the other?
  • What exactly is “love?”
  • Is it truly possible to be pure of heart?

Theology of the Body is a lens through which the human person is seen as made in God’s image and likeness, and that is very Good.

Theology of the Body is:

  • The human person according to God’s loving design
  • Human dignity and value of the whole person
  • A part of Christian Anthropology and Pope Saint John Paul II’s anthropology

 

Theology of the Body is Not Primarily:

  • A sex education program
  • A chastity program
  • A program
  • Just for Theology or Religion class
