Diocesan Red Mass
October 3, 2022 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
The Most Reverend Ronald W. Gainer, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of Harrisburg, will be the principal celebrant for the Annual Diocesan Red Mass on Monday, October 3, 2022, at 5:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Parish of St. Patrick, Harrisburg. Bishop Edward Malesic from the Diocese of Cleveland, and a native of the Diocese of Harrisburg, will be the homilist.
At the Red Mass, law students, lawyers, judges, lawmakers, and public officials gather together to pray for God’s wisdom and guidance in their pursuit of justice. The Red Mass originated in medieval England during the time of King Edward I, when the 12 judges of the High Court attended Mass as a group on the opening day of the judicial calendar. Today, the Red Mass coincides with the time period in which the U.S. Supreme Court begins its new term.
The Saint Thomas More Society of Central Pennsylvania, an organization of Catholic lawyers, sponsors the Red Mass each year.
