Diocesan Red Mass
September 28 @ 5:30 pm
The Most Reverend Timothy C. Senior, Bishop of Harrisburg, will be the principal celebrant for the Annual Diocesan Red Mass on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 5:30pm at the Cathedral Parish of St. Patrick, Harrisburg. The Most Reverend Ronald W. Gainer, Bishop Emeritus, will be the homilist. Priests of the Diocese of Harrisburg can concelebrate the Mass and are asked to bring their diocesan vestment. Deacons who will be in attendance are also asked to bring their diocesan dalmatic.
At the Red Mass, lawyers, law students, judges, lawmakers, and public officials gather together to pray for God’s wisdom and guidance in their pursuit of justice. The Red Mass originated in medieval England at the time of King Edward I, when the twelve judges of the High Court attended Mass as a group on the opening day of the judicial calendar. Today, the Red Mass coincides with the time period in which the U.S. Supreme Court begins its new term. The Saint Thomas More Society of Central Pennsylvania, an organization of Catholic lawyers, sponsors the Red Mass each year. All are welcome and encouraged to attend!
