Lutheran-Anglican-Roman Catholic Day of Dialogue
The Declaration of Independence and the Reign of Christ the King
In 1776, Thomas Jefferson penned the Declaration of Independence, publishing and declaring that these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be, Free and Independent States. In 1925, Pope Pius XI wrote Quas Primas: On the Feast of Christ the King, in which he urged the faithful to look for the peace of Christ in the Kingdom of Christ. The Solemnity of Christ the King was first celebrated in 1926 and is celebrated in all three of our traditions to this day. Thus, Lutheran-Anglican-Roman Catholic Dialogue 2026 presents The Declaration of Independence and the Reign of Christ the King: Faithful Citizenship on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the 100th anniversary of the Feast of Christ the King.
This year’s Day of Dialogue will focus on how a Christian can be a good citizen of the Kingdom of God and of these United States. Bishop Matthew Riegel, Bishop of the West Virginia-Western Maryland Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and Msgr. Gregory Fairbanks, Professor of Church History at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, will present on the topic according to their traditions and facilitate discussions by the attendees.
The day will include prayer according to the three LARC traditions, lunch together, a panel discussion, as well as time for dialogue and discussion.
