HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Most Reverend Timothy C. Senior, Bishop of Harrisburg, issued the following statement today:
Dear Friends in the Muslim Community,
On behalf of the clergy, religious and lay faithful of the Diocese of Harrisburg, I offer you peaceful greetings as you observe Ramadan.
Pope Francis said last year during his visit to Indonesia, while visiting the Istiqlal Mosque, that, “What really brings us closer is creating a connection in the midst of diversity, cultivating bonds of friendship, care and reciprocity. These relationships link us to others, allowing us to commit ourselves to seek the truth together, learning from the religious tradition of others, and coming together to meet our human and spiritual needs. They are also bonds that allow us to work together, to move forward together in pursuit of the same goals: defence of human dignity, the fight against poverty and the promotion of peace.” [1]
As you begin the holy observance of Ramadan and focus more deeply on fasting, prayer, reflection, and community, our Christian communities are preparing to enter Lent, a time also dedicated to more intense prayer, fasting, and works of mercy. These holy times for both our faith communities also call us to reflect on the hatred, suffering, and devastation that continues to impact the lives of many throughout the world, and, sadly, even in our own communities. Together, I hope that we can make Pope Francis’ goals a reality here in Central Pennsylvania as well. My prayers during this time are for peace throughout our world and for all in our local communities, especially yours during this Holy Month.
Amidst the conflict and challenges in our world, may the Almighty grant strength to those working to bring peace and, in His mercy, increase in us a spirit of mutual understanding and respect.
