HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Diocese of Harrisburg is pleased to announce that Robert A. Hopstetter has been named Director of the Diocesan Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). He will begin his role as Director on May 1, 2021.
“We are very excited to welcome Mr. Robert Hopstetter as the new Director for the Diocesan Catholic Youth Organization program,” said Bishop Ronald W. Gainer. “Robert brings not only extensive experience in many athletic sports, as a player, coach and administrator, but also a passion for his Catholic faith. We look forward to welcoming Robert to our Diocesan team as he leads this important aspect of our youth ministry.”
“I’m excited to be joining the Diocesan staff and to have the opportunity to work with the youth of the Diocese in a different fashion, continuing to bring the Catholic faith to those youth through sports and good sportsmanship,” said Hopstetter.
Mr. Hopstetter, a parishioner of Saint Joan of Arc Parish in Hershey, has been involved with athletic teams for more than 25 years, the past 14 of which have involved youth teams. He has been an assistant and head coach for middle school soccer, baseball, and various levels of football. Professionally, Mr. Hopstetter is an attorney with an independent practice in Harrisburg.
The Catholic Youth Organization, or more commonly CYO, brings together sports and faith, providing athletic and spiritual enrichment to more than 4,200 youth from 30 parishes and schools each year. These student athletes play on more than 300 teams and are led by over 500 coaches. Through the CYO program, youth are encouraged to grow in their relationships with God and their understanding of the Church, while also becoming responsible participants in their faith communities through involvement in athletic and academic programs. To participate in CYO activities, youth must be enrolled in a Catholic school or parish Religious Education program.
